Store bought meat-alternative products have drastically improved in quality and taste over the years. A plant-based veggie burger used to taste like a dried out puck of sawdust. But nowadays you can order delicious juicy plant-based burgers. Making it very hard to tell the difference between their meat-based counterparts.
However, homemade veggie burgers have always been my favourite! I love that you can mix and match ingredients and add new flavours as you go along!
It seems like every popular restaurant out there is jumping on board with adding the “Beyond Burger” or a similar brand to their menu. It begs the question of whether or not these meat alternative burgers are actually healthier for you.

- Total Time: 45 mins
- Yield: 5-6 1x
Description
The best tasting homemade veggie burgers you’ll ever make!
Ingredients
1 cup cooked brown rice
1 cup raw walnuts
1 Tbsp each chili powder, cumin, and smoked paprika
1/2 Tsp each salt and black pepper
½ cup medium white union
5 medium brown mushrooms
1 1/2 cups canned black beans
1/3 cup Italian breadcrumbs
1/2 Tbsp vegetable oil, plus extra for cooking
2 tbsp whole grain mustard
4 tbsp BBQ sauce
2 tbsp cooked corn
Instructions
- Place the cooked brown rice in large bowl.
- Toast the walnuts in a frying plan and then let them cool. Place the cooled walnuts, chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt and pepper into a blender and blend into a fine powder. Add this mixture to the bowl with the rice.
- Chop the onions and mushrooms into tiny pieces. Saute until onions are translucent and the mushrooms have softened. Add this mixture to the bowl.
- Rinse and drain the black beans. Then mash the black beans into a puree. Add this to the bowl.
- Add remaining ingredients to the bowl (vegetable oil, breadcrumbs, mustard, BBQ sauce and corn). Mix all the ingredients together with a large spoon.
- The mixture should come together enough that you can form ½ cup patties. If the mixture is too dry, add more BBQ sauce. If the mixture is too wet, add more breadcrumbs.
- The mixture will make 5-6 patties. Once you have formed the patties you can cook them on the barbeque or in frying pan. The burgers only need to be cooked until they are warm all away through. You will only need to cook them for about 10-15 mins in the bbq, or 5 mins each side on medium heat in a frying pan.
