Using a technique called Intuitive Eating
What is Intuitive Eating?
Intuitive eating is a personal process and journey of learning to honour your health by listening and responding to the internal messages of the body in order to meet your physical and psychological needs. The goal of intuitive eating is to be able to eat the foods you like, and recognize when to stop when you are satisfied. Intuitive Eating is not a diet or food plan to follow. Intuitive eating targets the root of problematic eating behaviours and provides strategies to resolve these issues and become confident in your food choices and relationship with food. Sounds pretty amazing eh?
Will this program help me lose weight?
Intuitive eating is not a weight-loss diet. Not only do diets not work – dieting is a well-established predictor of weight gain, as has been shown repeatedly in research. Dieting is where you likely developed your unhealthy relationship with food. The reality is that the root of the problem is the “diet mentality + diet culture.” The diet mentality is created by the act of dieting itself, and is basically a self-destructive pattern of thinking and behaving. Intentional weight loss through dieting is associated with harmful outcomes like disordered eating, weight cycling, and upholds the systems that value smaller bodies over larger bodies. Intuitive eating is different. It helps you break free from the cycle of dieting and learn to eat food normally – finding balance and making peace with food.
Discover How Intuitive Eating Supports Health
By tuning into your body’s natural hunger and fullness cues, you develop a healthier relationship with food, free from the stress of dieting. This approach fosters improved mental clarity and emotional well-being, as it reduces the guilt and anxiety often associated with restrictive eating habits. You’ll experience increased energy levels as your body receives the nourishment it needs when it needs it, leading to better overall health. Intuitive eating also enhances self-trust and body confidence, empowering you to make food choices that honor your body’s unique needs. Embrace a more balanced, joyful approach to eating that celebrates all aspects of well-being, not just the number on the scale.

Learn to Assess what type of hunger you are experiencing
When you tune into your hunger signals rather than relying on diet rules or external sources to guide eating, you can start to build awareness around the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger. Physical hunger is the body’s natural way of signaling that it needs fuel. On the other hand, emotional hunger can arise from feelings such as stress or sadness rather than physical signals.
What to expect & FAQ
How to the sessions work?
Your first appointment will be a 90-min in length, and you will receive an in-depth nutritional, lifestyle, + behavioral assessment with recommendations on what principles of intuitive eating would benefit you to work on. After your assessment, you can continue to work with one of our dietitians to help guide you through improving your relationship with food, set personal goals and develop a plan to support the behaviour changes you want to make. You can purchase follow-up sessions that includes a variety of free tools to help support you in your journey to improving your relationship with food. Or you can take the recommendations from your assessment and work on your relationship with food on your own, or connect back with us when you are ready. NOTE: Your assessment may uncover some areas that you are not ready to work on, and we fully support waiting until you are ready to take on this journey.
How many sessions do I need, and how long will this journey take?
Everyone’s journey will be different, and the length of time will depend on how much “dieting trauma” you have suffered from over the years. The more diets you have been on the more “undoing” you will need to address. Change doesn’t happen overnight, and it will depend on how many personal barriers your have to overcome to make peace with food. It can take time to restore the natural intuitive eater inside you and learn to trust your inner wisdom. We have designed packages that will help you at whatever stage you are in your health journey.
Why we won’t be weighing you or measuring you
Our clients are often VERY surprised at their first appointment when we don’t make them take off their shoes and weight them on the clinic scale.
If you are trying to improve your health, your weight is only one piece of your journey, and surprisingly isn’t something you can ultimately control with long-term success. Our ability to help you alter the number on the scale is similar. We want to work with you to focus on the non-scale victories that you will achieve, as these prove to be more beneficial in the long run.
How much time do I need to set aside each week to work on Intuitive Eating?
If you have dieted before, you will find that learning to implement the principles of intuitive eating takes less time than when you were endlessly recording and counting calories. You will gain time back because you won’t be obsessing about food all the time. You will be given a small activity to work on after each appointment. It is up to you how much time you take to practice and implement the activities. Some weeks it may seem like an easy task to do, and some weeks it might be harder. Intuitive eating is a new skill that you will have to learn to develop and work at practicing it. We will offer you suggestions on how to implement the principles in a way that will integrate into your lifestyle. Overall, you will be spending less time working on intuitive eating than when you were following rigid diet plans and rules.
Do I have to pay the full amount for my package upfront?
No, you do not have to pay the full amount upfront. However some of our clients prefer to do so for accountability. If you want to direct bill your package, you will have to pay the co-pay amount upfront at your first appointment (portion that is not covered by your insurance ex. 80% covered). Our office manager will determine what you owe and let you know prior to your appointment. If you are not direct billing because you don’t want to use insurance, or if you have a plan that doesn’t allow us to direct bill (ex. Manulife or Sunlife), we will require a 50% deposit for you package at the time of your appointment. You will be issued insurance receipts after each appointment that you can use to submit to your insurance provider, or for your income tax.
Do you offer virtual counselling sessions?
Yes, if you can’t make it to in-person appointments, or if you live outside our clinic office locations, we would be more than happy to meet with you virtually via video conferencing or over the phone.
