We’ve all heard the advice, “no snacking after dinner”  and that eating after dinner is not good for your health. However, that may not be the case. In this article, we are going to explain why some evenings snacking may be o.k. And we have even included some healthy evening snack ideas.

Let’s start off by saying, calories are calories regardless of when you eat them.

Your body needs a certain amount of calories every day, and it doesn’t matter if you eat 250 of them at 6 p.m. or 9 p.m.

If it has been 3-4 hours since your last meal, it is perfectly reasonable to be hungry, no matter what time of day it is. Hunger is our body’s way of telling us that we have used the calories from our last meal and it is time to fuel again.

Check-in with yourself

Before you head to the cupboard, ask yourself if you are really hungry?

Has it been a few hours since you ate dinner? Is your stomach grumbling? Or are you bored or anxious? Or are you stressed out and need to eat to unwind?

Some evening snacking can be habitual or mindless. For example, eating in the absence of hunger while watching TV or a movie.

What should you do if you find yourself hungry in the evening?

If you are hungry in the evening you should also reflect on how much you ate during the day. If we under ate throughout the day, evening hunger could be rebound hunger, which is simply your body saying “hey, I didn’t get enough fuel for the day”

Some healthy snack ideas to have in the evening are ones that pair a protein and a carbohydrate together.

  • Apple slices and peanut butter
  • Carrot stick and hummus
  • Fruit and cottage cheese
  • Walnuts and grapes
