I’d like to share with you a media interview I did for CHVN 95.1 FM in light of people worried about not having access to food during this difficult time of the pandemic. I share my insights after doing my own research with local grocery store owners, and funny enough, my recommendations are still the same… Meal plan instead of stocking up!
On Friday March 13, 2020 grocery store chains saw a huge boom in retail sales at the grocery store. It was crazy and insane. Apparently, sales were 10% higher than on the busiest days of the year (like Christmas eve or the day before Thanksgiving day).
I witnessed people purchasing food items that they don’t typically purchase just because of fear of scarcity.
I want to let people know that there is no reason to be worried about food shortages here in Canada. There will be pockets of food categories that will be out of stock for a few weeks and until the food supply chain can catch up, but please do not worry.
Meal plan instead of stocking up: Here are my key recommendations:
- Don’t panic, don’t hoard, purchase what you need.
- Plan out your meals and make a grocery list so that you don’t have to be running to the store every few days. *Our team of dietitians can help you with learning how to meal plan!
- Think of extending the number of times you go to the grocery store by purchasing a combination of fresh ingredients with frozen, or canned items. Consume the fresh ingredients at the beginning of the week, and then use the frozen or canned goods at the end of the week.
- Use this time to finally consider online grocery shopping!
- Use this time to get back into the kitchen and perfect your home cooking skills. Dust off those cookbooks and start cooking at home.
- Do some batch cooking or freezer meals!
